BAERLEIN'S leisurely account of his equally leisurely journey over the hills and dales and through the fields and forests of Ruthenia is a delicate blend of ironic charm and haphazard literary gypsying among the sturdy and almost illiterate peasant folk and villagers of this obscure little country -- a country bent upon making the most of its recently discovered self-determination." .
